Of Interest

While I'm not standing for the By-Election in Bennelong, I still feel the inclination to stick my oar in. Perhaps you'll find what I have to say of interest.

Both others in the pirate party and myself wanted me to contest this by-election, but we could not get our resources together in time. We wanted to be sure that we would do a better job this time. And we were unable to get enough people to commit. Still, I'm hopeful that - with a bit of notice - I'll be contesting the next election as a pirate party candidate.

I recently put myself forward as a candidate for these elections. You can see my statement here. I received around 100 votes, around 0.5%. Not so many, but it was better than the 0.3% that the Democratic Labor Party made in Central Ward last election, and I think compares reasonably well to the 1.3% I received at the Federal election, when I was an endorsed Pirate Party candidate.

A letter I wrote to Mr Dominello and Mr Alexander back in 2012. It is a reflection of who I was back then and the life I was living, and a genuine attempt at the time to engage with the political system. I invited them to get back to me for further discussion, and I was talking about getting in touch. The replies did not mention that suggestion and I decided against pursuing it further. Then I spoke to Mr Dominello at a later stage about the letter I sent and he gave be a blank look. Oh well.

There's a lot of hype around slowing down, or even reversing aging. Here's my view.

I hit another vehicle from behind - and proved in court it was the other drivers' fault. And along the way I learnt a lot about the courts, topping up my cynicism tank along the way.

Back in 2008, I had an on-line debate with Greg Clarke who was the then-director of the Centre for Public Christianity. The subject was just how much influence the teachings of Jesus have on moral ideas generally, at least in our Western tradition. I've reproduced it here. I've not included comments from others which also appeared on the original blog, given that this is a copy of the original material, which I don't think appears elsewhere on the web. Anyway, here's the original exchange ...

The "rights" based debate is much confused, with much distortion of the english language and abuse by vested interests.
